Where the Boys Are

“Where the Boys Are” premiered at the Gateway Theatre on Sunrise Boulevard on December 21, 1960. Three months later the usual spring break crowd of 10,000 college students in Fort Lauderdale grew to 50,000 and the city was aghast. The movie starred Delores Hart (now the Rev. Mother Delores Hart, O.S.B. and Prioress of a Benedictine Abbey in Connecticut), George Hamilton, Yvette Mimieux, Paula Prentiss, and Connie Francis and many of the scenes were filmed in Fort Lauderdale. The most remembered part of this famous beach movie is Connie Francis' song “Where the Boys Are” written by Neil Sedaka. It is amazing and wonderful for us that the Gateway Theatre, which opened in March of 1950, is still showing films 60 years later. And Connie, the boys are still here … we're just older now!
